Pregnancy's Most Embarrassing Symptoms

Pregnant women are often known for their glow. Unfortunately, they are also known for experiencing a range of unpleasant symptoms that can leave them feeling more red in the face than radiant.

While there is some comfort in knowing that others share these same tribulations, the bottom line is that problems such as nausea and unexpected belching can be embarrassing. Though total control may not be possible, there are things expectant mothers can do to help alleviate some of the unwanted side effects of pregnancy.

Morning Sickness
For many women, the first undesirable symptom of pregnancy is nausea and vomiting. While typically called "morning sickness," the problem can occur at other times of the day as well.

According to Dr. Kellie Flood-Shaffer, division director and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, the elevation of certain hormones during pregnancy causes relaxation of the smooth muscle of the stomach and makes it empty more slowly. Food or acid in the stomach "sours" and causes nausea and could result in vomiting. Common triggers include overeating, an empty stomach – which is why so many women experience the problem upon waking in the morning – or being exposed to certain foods or smells.
